Peter B. Noël, PhD

Dr. Noël earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Applied Sciences in Giessen, Germany. While conducting research in the area of interventional x-ray imaging at the Toshiba Stroke Research Center (Buffalo, NY), he received a Master's Degree in Computer Science. In 2009, he finalized his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a focus on advanced 3-D reconstruction algorithms for neuro-interventional applications. Subsequently, he joined the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the Technical University of Munich and established the Laboratory for Advanced Computed Tomography Imaging. He then went on to become Assistant Professor of Medical Physics and department-wide director of CT research. In 2018, Dr. Noël joined the Basic Research Division at the Department of Radiology of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania as Assistant Professor of Radiology and Director of Computed Tomography Research.

His primary research interests currently include spectral imaging with photon-counting detectors, phase-contrast and darkfield imaging, reconstruction approaches, and the clinical translation of advanced technologies. His work has found application in oncology, pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis screening. Dr. Noël's publication record not only includes more than 150 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, but also a patent portfolio in the areas of x-ray and CT imaging. He has been named to the editorial board of IEEE Transaction of Medical Imaging and European as well as is member of both national and international scientific organizations.
