Bitr\u00e4dande professor i till\u00e4mpad fysik vid Kungliga Tekniska h\u00f6gskolan (KTH).<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Hej Ali, vilken forskning bedriver du p\u00e5 MedTechLabs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jag leder KTH-teamet i ett samarbetsprojekt mellan KTH och Karolinska Institutet som heter Imaging the Epileptic Brain using Multimodal Quantum Sensors. Projektet kombinerar tv\u00e5 kvanttekniker: supraledande nanotr\u00e5dsdetektorer f\u00f6r enstaka fotoner (SNSPD), som vi utvecklar p\u00e5 KTH, och optiskt pumpade magnetometrar f\u00f6r hj\u00e4rnavbildning (OPM-MEG) p\u00e5 KI. Genom att integrera dessa tv\u00e5 system samtidigt str\u00e4var vi efter att ge neurokirurger en unik och detaljerad karta \u00f6ver b\u00e5de den elektriska aktiviteten och \u00e4mnesoms\u00e4ttningen i hj\u00e4rnan under epileptiska anfall, information som f\u00f6r n\u00e4rvarande \u00e4r om\u00f6jlig att f\u00e5 fram med befintliga verktyg. Jag \u00e4r ocks\u00e5 medhandledare f\u00f6r doktoranden i projektet tillsammans med kollegor vid KI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Vad hoppas du att din forskning ska uppn\u00e5?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vissa epilepsipatienter svarar inte p\u00e5 medicinering, och f\u00f6r m\u00e5nga av dem \u00e4r d\u00e5 kirurgi det b\u00e4sta alternativet. Men f\u00f6r att kunna genomf\u00f6ra en operation m\u00e5ste man veta exakt var i hj\u00e4rnan anfallen har sitt ursprung, och dagens bilddiagnostik kan helt enkelt inte svara p\u00e5 det. V\u00e5r f\u00f6rhoppning \u00e4r att kombinationen av OPM-MEG och SNSPD ska ge l\u00e4kare ett nytt verktyg f\u00f6r att lokalisera anfallsomr\u00e5det med mycket st\u00f6rre s\u00e4kerhet, vilket i slut\u00e4ndan inneb\u00e4r f\u00e4rre misslyckade operationer, mindre borttagning av frisk hj\u00e4rnv\u00e4vnad och b\u00e4ttre l\u00e5ngsiktiga resultat f\u00f6r patienterna. Enbart i Sverige skulle detta kunna ber\u00f6ra omkring 50 patienter per \u00e5r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Ber\u00e4tta om din yrkesbakgrund och vad som driver dig som forskare?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Min bakgrund ligger inom kvantfotonik, n\u00e4rmare best\u00e4mt i att bygga h\u00e5rdvara som manipulerar och detekterar enskilda fotoner. Jag disputerade i kisel-nanofotonik i USA, har haft postdoktorala tj\u00e4nster vid TU Delft och KTH, och \u00e4r sedan 2020 fast anst\u00e4lld bitr\u00e4dande professor vid KTH, d\u00e4r jag leder Q-Photon-labbet. Det mesta av mitt arbete har fokuserat p\u00e5 integrerade kvantkretsar, enfotondetektorer och kvantber\u00e4kning. MedTechLabs-projektet \u00e4r sp\u00e4nnande f\u00f6r mig just d\u00e4rf\u00f6r att vi tar den detektorteknologi vi har utvecklat f\u00f6r kvantfotonikexperiment och fr\u00e5gar vad den kan g\u00f6ra f\u00f6r en patient.
