T\u00e4nk dig ett implantat som skickar elektriska pulser till en nerv, som i sin tur signalerar till immunsystemet att d\u00e4mpa inflammation i kroppen. F\u00f6rs\u00f6k p\u00e5 patienter med kronisk inflammation p\u00e5g\u00e5r redan och resultaten \u00e4r lovande. Bioelektronisk medicin skulle kunna minska anv\u00e4ndningen av antiinflammatoriska l\u00e4kemedel och dessutom rikta behandlingen direkt mot den del av kroppen d\u00e4r inflammationen finns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Programmet var inriktat p\u00e5 att kunna \u00f6vervaka och stimulera den stora och livsviktiga vagusnerven med korta elektriska pulser, i syfte att p\u00e5 ett riktat s\u00e4tt behandla inflammatoriska sjukdomstillst\u00e5nd. Programmet var ett av de f\u00f6rsta i v\u00e4rlden som implementerade bioelektronisk medicin kliniskt f\u00f6r behandling av inflammatorisk sjukdom i en patientn\u00e4ra milj\u00f6. I januari 2020 startade det tv\u00e4rvetenskapliga samarbetet d\u00e4r l\u00e4kare, immunologer, ingenj\u00f6rer och matematiker sammanf\u00f6rs. Forskningen fokuserade framf\u00f6r allt p\u00e5 att reda ut hur signal\u00f6verf\u00f6ringen mellan nerver och immunceller g\u00e5r till p\u00e5 molekyl\u00e4r niv\u00e5 och vilka delar av den stora vagusnerven som kommunicerar med immunsystemet.
